Self-test for Panic Disorder

Part (A) Do you have the following symptoms? 
1. Palpitations or pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate
2. Sweating
3. Trembling or shaking
4. Dry mouth (not due to medication or dehydration)

 

Part (B) Do you have the following symptoms? 
1. Difficulty breathing
2. Feeling of choking
3. Chest pain or discomfort
4. Nausea or abdominal distress (e.g. churning in stomach)
5. Feeling dizzy, unsteady, faint or lightheaded
6. Feelings that objects are unreal (derealization) or that the self is distant or ‘not really here’ (depersonalization)
7. Fear of losing control, ‘going crazy’ or passing out
8. Fear of dying
9. Hot flushes or cold chills
10. Numbness or tingling sensations

 

Part (C) Do your episodes of anxiety have the following characteristics?
1. It is a discrete episode of intense fear 
2. It starts abruptly
3. It reaches a maximum within a few minutes and lasts at least some minutes

 

Part (D) Do you have the following symptoms? 
1. You experience recurrent anxiety attacks that are not consistently associated with a specific situation or object, and they often occur spontaneously and are unpredictable. The attacks are not associated with marked exertion or with exposure to dangerous or life-threatening situations.

 

How to determine if you have Panic Disorder?
If you have at least 4 of the symptoms from both part A and B in total (with at least 1 from part A), together with all of the symptoms from part C and D, you may be suffering from Panic Disorder. You may consider seeing a psychiatrist for professional advice.
